The Rotary Club of Daniel Island and other participating Rotary Clubs in the Charleston area will hold the 13th Annual Charity Duck Race on Saturday, June 1, 2019, on Daniel Island. Established by the Rotary Club of Daniel Island in 2007, this fundraising event has grown each year since and now includes six other Rotary Clubs in the greater Charleston area: Johns Island; Mt. Pleasant; North Charleston Breakfast; North Charleston; St. Andrews (West Ashley); and Summerville.

The race is a day of fun with something for everyone! There are games, jump castles, face painters, music, food vendors and more! Bring the whole family and join in the celebration.

The proceeds from this event are used to fund Rotary community service programs locally and around the world. Each of the participating Rotary clubs is designating one or more Lowcountry charities as named beneficiaries of the duck race. These charities represent a wide selection of local nonprofit organizations focused on health, food and nutrition, housing, children and families, and literacy. Over the past 10 years, this event has raised over $1,000,000 for local beneficiaries and Rotary projects worldwide.

The Race starts at 5 pm, and the winners will be announced at 6 pm; the music and fun will continue until 9 pm.

In the fall of 2014, it came to the attention of then Mayor Bill Collins that there may be an ongoing problem concerning the homeless in the Summerville area. The Mayor promptly formed a committee of individuals from the community who were on the front lines of dealing with this issue.  The group first noticed that there was no organization or facility to meet the need in the Summerville area. The group realized this was a large concern and the primary need was for a facility in which to house the homeless in the Lowcountry area.  And so the Dorchester County Community Outreach doing business as Low Country Home of Hope, a 501 (c)(3) corporation, was born.

Their mission is to provide a safe shelter, food, support services and an avenue to self sufficiency for homeless men in the Summerville community.

Since the charter of the Lowcountry SC Chapter was signed in 1917, the Lowcountry South Carolina Chapter has served the people of Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton, Jasper, Georgetown, and Williamsburg counties as part of the Palmetto South Carolina Region of the American Red Cross. Our services may reach the entire world. Our volunteers and staff members may be called to serve down the street, across the country or around the world.

The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work. When you help with a gift of your time, your blood donation, or your financial gift, you join the Red Cross family.
